ASK YOURSELF

Do you know how to advocate for yourself if someone tries to overstep your boundaries? It’s difficult, isn’t it? That’s an uncomfortable conversation to start with, but often there’s the added stress of being unsure about what happened. Did they really mean anything by it? Were you just overreacting?

Never keep quiet when someone makes you uncomfortable by overstepping your comfort zone. It doesn’t matter if it seems reasonable to someone else. If you feel pushed or cornered or confused about someone’s intentions, you have a right to say so.

This is particularly important if someone has repeatedly made you uncomfortable and hasn’t picked up on your hints that you don’t like their behavior. Consider creating a script for yourself and practicing in front of the mirror so that you are prepared the next time it happens. Speak up and tell them you don’t like what they’re doing or how they’re treating you. You deserve to be heard, and no one has the right to cross your boundaries.

And how much better will you feel after you tell them how you really feel?
